For those who want to top up their tan at over 200mph…
Brabus has taken the wraps off their new 800 E V12 Cabriolet.
Based on the Mercedes E-Class Convertible, the car features a twin turbo 6.3-liter V12 engine with 800 PS (588 kW / 788 hp) and an electronically-limited 1,100 Nm (811 lb-ft) of torque. It enables the drop top to accelerate from 0-62 mph in 3.7 seconds, 0-124 mph in 9.9 seconds and 0-186 mph in 23.9 seconds. If you keep your foot planted, the 800 E will eventually top out at 231 mph (370 km/h) which makes it the fastest four-seat convertible in the world. We’re not sure if that top speed is with the roof up or down, but we have contacted Brabus to confirm. If it is with the roof up, it is very impressive for the Mercedes roof, as these can often be ‘sucked’ outwards at 150 mph+ speeds in normal cars, hence why they are speed limited. If it can withstand 231 mph it is amazing. But if that top speed is with the roof down, a whole new range of problems arise which makes it doubly impressive if this is how the top speed was set. Aerodynamics play a huge part at high speeds, and even more so when the masses or turbulence caused by an open cockpit are brought into play. We’ll hopefully hear from Brabus soon to get confirmation.
On the styling front, the 800 EV12 is distinguished by an aerodynamic carbon fiber body kit comprising a new aggressive front bumper with extra ventilation for the massive engine, a new rear bumper with aerodynamic diffuser housing 4 exhaust pipes, a new carbon bonnet, and wheelarch extensions front and rear. We’re not sure about keeping the extensions in matte black though, we think the car would look far more aggressive and stealthy if it were all gloss black. A small boot spoiler completes the external modifications, giving the car a look not dissimilar to the Mercedes CLK DTM Cabriolet.
As with all Brabus creations, the interior also gets a makeover. They have a good place to start with the E-Class Cabriolet, but Brabus turn up the luxury with leather on every possible surface (in this case a gorgeous blood red), quilting the transmission tunnel and covering the dash top in alcantara. Though one would expect that given the asking price – each vehicle will be built to order and pricing starts at €478,000 ($681,200).
This may seem a high price, but after all this is an 800PS car capable of 231mph so it is in the same league as many top level supercars. Also, the level of work Brabus does to their creations is above all others. Like legendary Porsche tuners RUF, the level of work is so extensive and of such a high quality that they actually qualify as a manufacturer in their own right, and the cars are registered as Brabus, with Mercedes-Benz not appearing anywhere on the documentation.
