Hardcore track/fast road version of the 458 ditches Scuderia name…
Ferrari has revealed the hardcore variant of the 458 ahead of the public reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Most were expecting the ‘Monte Carlo’ name, some the resurrection of the ‘Scuderia’ tag found on the 430, but Ferrari has gone for the simple ‘458 Speciale’. With extensive modifications to the aerodynamics, styling, powertrain and dynamics the Speciale is said to offer the closest experience to a race car on the road, according to Ferrari.
The styling changes were largely dictated by the aerodynamic requirements, though they were done in conjunction with Pininfarina to ensure a cohesive look. At the front there is a new front bumper incorporating two large intakes and built in ducts at the side. The deformable vanes are gone from the intakes, instead there are movable aerodynamic spoilers underneath the bumper. Above this there is a new bonnet, with two large vents separated by a central spine, similar to that fitted on the F50.
Just ahead of the rear wheels there are small sharkfin wings to direct airflow from the side skirts. The rear sees a big change too, with a full width mesh grille separating the rear lights, while there is a huge carbon fibre diffuser while has new twin exit exhaust pipes sitting above it, much like on the 430 Scuderia. The final touches are a new set of lightweight 19” alloy wheels and bicolour stripes running the length of the car.
The 458 Speciale uses a modified version of the regular 458’s 4.5 litre V8, now putting out 597 bhp and 398 lb/ft or torque. This makes it the most powerful naturally aspirated V8 ever made by Ferraro and has a specific output of 133 bhp/litre.
The Speciale has also been on a diet, saving 90 kg over the regular 458, though Ferrari hasn’t stated how as yet. With this 1290 kg weight, the 458 Speciale manages some pretty impressive performance figures, with 0 – 62 mph taking just 3.0 seconds and 0 – 124 mph taking 9.1 seconds.
Inside, there is evidence of where the weigh was saved, with bare aluminium for the floors and a new centre console featuring the drive buttons on a carbon fibre stalk. The dashboard around the passenger’s knee area has also been reprofiled to save weight.
The 458 Speciale is expected to cost around £210,000 when it goes on sale early next year.
