Described as ‘the Big Nasty’ by Chevrolet execs!

Chevrolet have used their home motor show to wow the world with the reveal of the new 2014 Corvette Z06, with serious amounts of aero, power and tech making it the closest thing to the C7.R GT racer yet.

There have been Z06 models of the Corvette since the 1960’s but they have always been hardcore versions – the latest model is a true halo model, but is designed to appeal to more customers with the option of an auto gearbox and a targa roof.

Visually the new Z06 really doesn’t pull any punches – it’s not just aggressive, it’s damn near frightening to look at. The key theme to the Z06 is aerodynamics, taken directly from the lessons learnt on the C7.R racer. At the front the nose is the same to reduce costs, but the grille has two large brake cooling ducts, while below the bumper sits a huge carbon fibre splitter which extends to the sides where there are winglets to direct the air more cleanly. There are large vents behind the front wheels, while the bonnet gets a vented section with a black panel behind it. At the rear the familiar central quad exhaust sits in a new carbon fibre diffuser while a large carbon spoiler sits atop the bootlid. A new design of 19- and 20-inch alloy wheels complete the look, which is particularly striking in the yellow of the press car shots. Inside the Z06 gets lots of carbon fibre, a flat bottomed steering wheel and a magnesium-framed Competition seat.

Looks may be one thing, but that’s nothing without the firepower to back it up and the Z06 doesn’t disappoint. It is powered by an all-new 6.2 litre supercharged V8 featuring direct injection and variable valve timing to produce 625 bhp (minimum – this may change after the car is fully developed) and 635 lb/ft of torque. There are no official performance figures, but expect 0 – 62 mph to come up in under 3.5 seconds, while the top speed should break the 200 mph barrier.

The Z06 will go on sale in early 2015, with prices expected to be around £50,000 in the US.
