They call it a concept, but we know it’ll be in production soon enough…

Alfa Romeo has surprised everyone by revealing a concept for the 4C Spider at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. They even went as far as fervently denying that it would be coming to the show when questioned about it last week.

The 4C has been a massive hit thanks to the exotic looks, great performance, lightweight construction and nimble handling – but has always come under criticism for one thing – the headlights. They are a carbon fibre (or plastic) unit that holds small projectors in place and looks really odd – very out of place with the rest of the design. But thankfully for the Spider (in concept form at least) the headlights are lovely looking faired-in projector units which suit the lines of the car much better.

The windscreen surround and rollover bar have been left in naked carbon fibre to show off the car’s construction and there is a new twin central exit exhaust. There are also some absolutely stunning forged alloy wheels. The roof panel is carbon fibre and can be removed in two pieces and stored in the front bonnet area. The Spider weighs just under 60 kg more than the coupe.

The 4C Spider is powered by the coupe’s 1750cc turbocharged petrol engine producing 240 bhp and 258 lb/ft of torque, which means 0 – 62 mph in 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph.

We expect to see a production version of the 4C Spider later in the year, with production starting in early 2015. The 4C Spider is likely to cost around £5000 more than the £45,000 coupe.
