Mercedes reveals the S63 AMG Coupe

Sleek looks, big power. What’s not to like?
Mercedes has revealed the new S63 AMG Coupe, oddly not at the Geneva Motor Show a couple of weeks ago but just after. The naming follows the change from CL to S-Class Coupe, meaning there is just an S63 badge on the back. Aiming to take sales directly from the Bentley Continental GT and Aston Martin DB9, Mercedes claims this is the sportiest, most cosseting, direct and comfortable big coupe they’ve ever made – strong claims.
As with the rest of the current AMG range, the S63 Coupe uses the impressive 5.5 litre twin turbocharged V8 putting out 577 bhp and 663 lb/ft of torque. Power is sent through the seven speed AMG Speedshift gearbox, to the rear wheels as standard, but for the first time the 4Matic four wheel drive system is available as an option. Despite a 65 kg weight reduction over the old model resulting in a weight of 1995 kg, performance is slightly blunted but still very quick. 0 – 62 mph is dealt with in 4.3 seconds (3.9 for the 4Matic) and the top speed is 155 mph with an AMG Driver’s Package available which ups the top speed to 186 mph among other things.
Both the rear wheel drive and 4Matic four wheel drive models weight the same which seems odd, but the rear wheel drive model has standard AirMatic suspension at the back, while the 4Matic is steel sprung which is lighter.
Visually the S63 gets an aggressive makeover from the svelte S-Class Coupe, with the typical AMG cues of large intakes in the bumper, a lower splitter, new alloy wheels and a rear diffuser with quad exhausts. It adds a definite air of aggression while still keeping the sleek looks of the base model.
The S63 uses the Magic Body Control system pioneered on the S-Class saloon and the new cornering tilt function where the car can lean into corners by 2.5 degrees at up to 112 mph.
The S63 AMG Coupe goes on sale in the UK in November at an expected £125,000.
