Audi has revealed the latest range-topping variant of the R8 ahead of the public unveiling at the Le Mans 24hr race in two weeks. Replacing the GT at the top of the facelifted range, the LMX is not only the most powerful R8 ever, it also comes with the most technology yet on an Audi road car.

The R8 LMX is the first production car to feature laser headlights as standard. The BMW i8 has them as an option, but all LMX models will come with the new lights, which work above 37 mph in conjunction with the LED high beam projectors.

Power is provided by the same 5.2 litre V10 as in the V10 Plus model, but with an extra 20 bhp taking it to 562 bhp, transmitted through the standard seven speed S-tronic dual clutch gearbox to all four wheels. 0 – 62 mph is dispatched in 3.4 seconds and the LMX tops out at 198 mph.

Visually the LMX gets new 19-inch alloy wheels in matte grey, the full carbon fibre bodywork pack from the V10 Plus, along with new carbon fibre canards on the front bumper and a large fixed carbon fibre rear wing. Inside the LMX has diamond quilted seats with body colour stitching and seat backs.

The R8 LMX is limited to just 99 units worldwide and will cost £160,025 when it goes on sale in June.
