Caterham has chosen this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed to unveil their fastest, most powerful and frankly craziest car yet – the 620R. The 620R replaces the R500 at the top of the Seven range and as with the R500 takes its name from the number of bhp/tonne that the car has – a massive rise over the previous car.

That is thanks to the new 2.0 litre Ford Duratec engine that develops 311 bhp and 219 lb/ft of torque combined with a kerb weight of around 500 kg. What these incredible stats add up to is a 0 – 60 mph time of 2.79 seconds, a match for pretty much anything on the road including a Veyron.

There is a new nose cone to optimise the airflow through and over the car into the race derived cooling system and 13 inch alloy wheels wearing Avon ZZR tyres. Caterham claims there are some interior upgrades too, including in their words – “performance-focused instrumentation and ergonomic switchgear” – along with a carbon fibre dashboard, seats and a quick release steering wheel.

The 620R will go on sale later this year for £49,995 – surely a bargain given the level of performance on offer.
