Well tally-ho, cor blimey and by jove it’s the Best of British week again on In the Headlights! If you were to pop into the BOTB head office you’d find the whole place full of people wearing top hats, monocles in, drinking tea and eating crumpets. Britain has a fantastic heritage when it comes to cars, some of the best and oldest car companies in the world are British, including Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, McLaren, Bentley, Jaguar, Land Rover, Caterham, Morgan and TVR. Yes yes, I know some pedants are now shouting that ‘X’ is Indian owned, ‘Y’ is German owned etc but no matter who is at the top of the tree these brands are British through and through. Motorsport has a huge place in the UK too with a huge number of teams having their bases here from Formula One, rallying, Le Mans and other series’. So when it comes to Best of British week it’s fairly easy to pick the cars, which this week has been done by David Bartlett, Dealer Principle of Aston Martin Mayfair. Here are my thoughts on his choices…

Well given that David is top dog at an Aston Martin dealer it’s no surprise that there’s one in his choices, but in all honesty I think anyone would have chosen the new Vantage this week. Revealed only last week, the new Vantage thrusts the small Aston into the 21st century with a German shove. Under that radically aggressive and incredibly stunning bodywork sits an AMG-sourced twin turbo 4.0 litre V8 that sounds even better than it does in the Mercs, driven through a ZF 8spd auto gearbox to the rear wheels. 503bhp means performance is stunning and the styling of this new Vantage is incredible – some may not quite ‘get it’ from pictures but it’s stunning in the metal. The other two door V8 coupe we have is the new TVR Griffith. Packing a Cosworth-tuned 5.0 litre naturally aspirated V8 it puts out 500bhp through the rear wheels via a manual gearbox and weighs just 1250kg – that means stats are very similar to the new Vantage but for £30,000 less – sounds to us like there’s going to be quite a battle going to happen on some Welsh hills at some point in 2018!

Next up we have a very popular car whenever we feature it – the Range Rover Sport SVR – but the difference now being it’s had a facelift for 2018! So there are new LED headlights and tail lights, a more aggressive reprofiled bumper, the option of an exposed carbon bonnet and the supercharged 5.0 litre V8 engine now has 562bhp. In an SUV! The biggest change comes inside though, where it now has the far more modern and technologically advanced centre console and dash from the Velar, meaning you have screens everywhere to control everything from your music to the climate control. So it looks very much like the best performance SUV has got even better – given that it went down a twisty road better than anything of its size had any right to before, I’m expecting big things of the refreshed SVR. Finally, we have a car that has an image so steeped in British culture that most of the models are literally covered in Union Flags – the Mini. In this case we’re talking about the crazy 228bhp John Cooper Works hatchback which is one of the most fun cars you could ever use to tackle a winding country road. It’s small, powerful, looks great and has a seriously funky interior. I’d absolutely love one of these to blast around in!

These four prizes are only in the competition until midnight on Sunday so get your tickets forthwith!
