ITH – Audi Special! {{favouriteCount}} Quantity of Likes

Audi ya like that! Quattroh-dear. What a load of RS. Right, that’s all the Audi based puns out of the way, so we can get down to business. Why are we singling out Audis for a special ITH this week? Well mainly because it’s what you, our wonderful players do most weeks – look back through the Top 20 cars list from each week and you can guarantee an Audi will be in the Top 10 or even Top 5 most weeks. There’s something about the German brand that really appeals to players of BOTB and you just love to come back for more.

It’s no great surprise of course, Audis have their legendary quattro all-wheel-drive system which gives them fantastic grip in all weather, they have the best cabins in the industry with futuristic, clear design and perfect ergonomics, clean crisp, aggressive exterior design and some truly hilariously powerful engines in their RS ranges. You all love to play for them (which is why we were sad when the RS6 went out of production) so we’ve added in four beauties this week from the crazy 500hp Litchfield RS3 to the driver’s special R8 RWS. Let’s have a look:

R8 RWS

The Audi R8 in the current second generation is a huge sales success for Audi, mainly because you basically get a Lamborghini Huracan with Audi interior and styling – the perfect combo. But as impressive as these V10 powered supercars are, they’ve always lacked a certain something for the enthusiastic driver and that is down to the AWD system. It’s one of the better systems in the R8 but it just doesn’t quite let the driver connect to the car as well – which was even more frustrating as Lambo offered a RWD Huracan. Well Audi listened and have released a limited run of RWD R8s called, somewhat confusingly, the RWS (Rear Wheel Series), which pairs the lower powered V10 engine with the stunning Coupe body and takes away the front driveshafts. So by leaving the front wheels to only do one job, it means the steering is sweeter, there’s more feedback for the driver and thanks to the weight lost, the nose is keener to turn in. Once you turn in and accelerate you see the other benefits too – the rear wheels have got 532bhp going through them and want to break free! You can steer the RWS on the throttle and have a properly involved driving experience, all while enjoying the best cabin in the business and the kind of aural delights that only a V10 can deliver. Perfection.

Litchfield RS3 Stage 2

It wasn’t that long ago that a hot hatch had 200bhp and was considered rather brisk even then. The original Focus RS has just 201bhp and the new RS has 345bhp, but believe it or not the time has come when that original benchmark has been doubled. Step forward the new Audi RS3 with a scarcely believably 400hp (394bhp) under the bonnet. Now you’d probably think that 400hp would be enough for most people, but believe it or not there are those out there who want more… Step forward Litchfield tuning – they apply their Stage 2 upgrade to the RS3 Sportback which boosts power to an incredible 500bhp. In an A3! Torque rises to 650Nm as well, so performance gets an expected boost with the incredible traction offered by the quattro system meaning it can sprint to 62mph quicker than most supercars. We honestly think that on anything other than a perfect, warm, dry day the Litchfield Stage 2 RS3 is going to be one of the quickest cars available, point-to-point.

RS5 Sportback

Ah we do love a big V8 here at BOTB… Wait, what? The RS5 hasn’t got a V8 any more? What is this madness?! Well, you can thank the environment mainly as reduced emissions and increased efficiency is the driving force behind the current trend for downsizing. So out goes the 4.2 litre V8 and in comes a 2.9 litre twin turbo V6 (also seen in the new Porsche Panamera 4S). Thankfully it still produces the same 444bhp, but there’s more torque and this new RS5 is lighter than the predecessor too which means performance is brisker. 0-62mph takes just 3.9 seconds which is crazy fast and there’s a 174mph if you buy the Audi Driver’s Pack Option. Visually the RS5 really takes it up a notch over the normal A5 with flared wheelarches, an aggressive front bumper and rear diffuser flanked by the RS-standard oval exhaust pipes. There are lots of nice carbon fibre exterior bits you can spec at extra cost too, all adding to the aggressive look. Of course this is the RS5 Sportback model, so you get four doors and usable rear seats, but you still keep the coupe-like roofline. The RS5 Coupe is a great handling car, so we’re expecting big things from this version too.

SQ7

You may think that over £70,000 is a lot for an Audi SUV, but you should actually think of this SQ7 as a half price Bentley Bentayga Diesel. They share the same platform, the same innovative 48v electrical system and lest we not forget the party piece - the same engine. And what an engine it is, a 4.0 litre twin turbo V8 diesel producing a staggering 429bhp and 900Nm of torque. That’s the kind of torque that means when you floor the throttle, the earth’s rotation slows a little. There’s also some pretty savage acceleration – it will confuse even the most committed petrolhead when a 2.5-tonne SUV hurtles to 62mph in under 5 seconds, but thanks to the clever air suspension system it also handles a lot better than you’d expect in the twisties too. Of course this is still an Audi, so you get understated yet classy styling on the outside – being the SQ7 there’s a little more aggression but it’s certainly still the kind of SUV that can mix with Range Rovers and not look out of place. The other Audi trademark is of course their interiors and the SQ7 is another winner here – stylish, uncluttered and ergonomically perfect.
