ITH – TGE TV – The Interview {{favouriteCount}} Quantity of Likes

"You're traveling through another dimension, a dimension not only of sight and sound but of mind. A journey into a wondrous land whose boundaries are that of imagination. That's the signpost up ahead - your next stop, the YouTube Zone."

It certainly may feel that way to some of the older generation – the meteoric rise of YouTubers as celebrities, idols and that most jarring of new phrases – influencers – is a phenomenon that has baffled many. It is slightly more understandable in this automotive arena though, we all love to see nice cars and these YouTube stars, starting with Shmee150, through Paul Wallace of SoL and Sam from SeenThroughGlass started to allow us access to such cars on a daily basis, right up the present day with our endorser this week, the rising YT star Tom Exton of TGE TV.

His list of recent cars has included a McLaren 720S, Ferrari F12, Porsche 911 GT3 RS and a BMW M4 DTM, so why did he choose these three cars – and a watch?!

Lamborghini Aventador S

To me – the epitome of what the word ‘supercar’ is all about. An icon, and the latest, greatest production V12 to come from Lamborghini – sharing the same V12 DNA as the Miura, Countach & Murcielago that came before it. Nothing on the road challenges the Aventador S for drama & road presence.

Urban Land Rover Defender

Again, much like the Aventador – the Defender is an icon. Albeit a muddier, British one, with roots dating back to military use decades ago & still used worldwide. Now discontinued, Defenders are soaring in value. Rough and ready to drive, but strangely endearing. A keeper for me.

Porsche 911 Carrera T

Due to be available early 2018, the Carrera T is Porsche’s attempt at a ‘driving thrills/back to basics’ version of their again, iconic, 911. This time with the initially controversial 991.2 3.0T engine. A slicker manual box, some weight saving, retro touches, less sound deadening, a louder exhaust and the option to fit full buckets is a recipe I can’t wait to try. Porsche rarely get anything wrong!

Rolex Daytona Cosmograph Oysterflex

The Rolex Daytona has been around for decades now, with a recent well-known vintage piece fetching $17m the other week. 2017 has seen the introduction of the Daytona on Rolex’s all new ‘Oysterflex’ strap – a rubber bracelet which is both tough, and durable, while reflecting the oyster bracelet it replaces. This new model is available in white, yellow and rose gold. With a rose gold piece in my collection already, I went for yellow gold for mine.

But who is the man behind the beard? We sat Tom down and grilled him to medium-rare…

Tom Exton is regularly described as the busiest man in the City - combining his day job at an investment bank with his founder role at fitness group LDN Muscle and his hugely popular video channel showcasing his love of cars.

And love is definitely the word, as Tom lights up when talking about all things four-wheeled. His own fleet would make many a petrolhead turn green with envy, with a Lambo, Defender and Golf GTi jostling for position.

"From a very young age I’ve been obsessed with cars, from the point at which I could read I had car books, including ‘Eye-Spy’ ones which my brother and I would play in the back of the car on long car journeys, (probably given away my age there with that – don’t think they’ve existed for about 20 years).

“My parents never really had anything flashy or interesting, my dad was into his cars but they always put other, (important) things first and weren’t able to indulge on that front. I remember him being loaned a Ford Granada turbo something while his diesel Ford Scorpio was in for service, and on the school run building up the revs to boost again and again which me and my brother found hilarious.

“But while I’ve always been into cars, it has only been in the past few years I’ve been lucky enough to immerse myself in the supercar world properly. My first full time role in a bank started in 2012, and LDNM (LDN Muscle – my fitness business) started in 2013. Both have built up alongside a few other sidelines to mean I’m now fortunate enough to enjoy some ridiculous cars, with my first supercar - the Lamborghini Huracan LP580-2- arriving last April. I am still full time in the city, with no plans to give up any time soon.”

Yet getting behind the wheel of some of the world’s most glamorous cars gives Tom an indescribable rush.

“Driving a 570s Spider across a dam in the Spanish mountains with McLaren earlier this year was amazing, some of the drone footage was really special, as was a trip to the Swiss Alps with Alfa Romeo. Although if honest, my favourite driving experience was just using my F12 after I had the exhaust changed, loved that car – should never have sold it! Sounded like an old school F1 car at 28mph in first gear! Lol.”

And his dream job (although many would think he has it already!) is motoring related too.

“I’d love to be a Top Gear presenter if possible please. Let me know where to send my CV. Jokes aside, that would be great – the things they get to do, and the money, yes please. Ridiculous.”

So does his CV include a ‘pass first time’ tick?

“Yep – first time with 2 or 3 minors J My twin got one minor though so I considered my success there as a failure!”

And if BOTB were to pull up to your house with the car of your dreams, what would that car be?

“The F12 TDF please – give me a shout in advance to make sure I’m in. And also warn the general public!”
