Ford has revealed the first hot variant of the all-new Mustang at the LA Motor Show 2014 – the Shelby GT350. Aimed as a direct competitor to the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, the GT350 is a pure bred track and fast road car with numerous changes over the standard V8 GT to make it the most focused new Mustang yet.

Eschewing the supercharged V8 of the old Mustang GT500, the GT350 gets a very special power plant – a 5.2 litre naturally aspirated V8 producing ‘over 500 bhp’ according to Ford (we expect this to be c.530 bhp) and ‘over 400 lb/ft’ (again we expect this to be around 450 lb/ft in reality) thanks to a flat plane crankshaft which allows for a freer breathing engine and hence more power without having to resort to forced induction.

Additional components contribute to the GT350’s track credentials, like Brembo six-piston calipers at the front (four-pot at the rear), lightweight 19-inch alloy wheels wearing Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres and sophisticated MagnaRide dampers which allows for a much more controlled ride in all situations.

Visually the bodywork is all new from the windscreen forward, with a new vented bonnet, wider front arches, a wide main grille opening with a composite construction and a low aerodynamic splitter, all of which add up to a seriously aggressive front end. There are pronounced side skirts and at the rear a large diffuser with four large chromed exhaust tips sit below a blacked out rear light panel and a small carbon fibre lip spoiler.

Sadly, unlike he normal V8 GT there are no plans to offer the GT350 in RHD in the UK, but personal imports will of course be allowed and probably very popular!
