Mercedes has proven today that there isn’t a niche they’re not willing to fill, or even invent! The A-Class is a normal 5dr hatchback, but instead of launching a normal saloon version, they brought out the CLA, a saloon-coupe with a sloping roofline much like that of the CLS and it has proven to be a massive success. There is also the crossover-styled GLA, but this is filling another niche. So what do you do if you like the CLA but need a bit more space? Have no fear, Mercedes is here to add another niche model – the CLA Shooting Brake! Much like the CLS Shooting Brake it takes the CLA and adds a longer, heavily sloped roofline to give an increased load bay and seriously slick looks.

Up to the A-Pillar it’s the same as the CLA, but from there back there is a long curved side window leading to the rear which features the same rear lights, but a sloping rear hatch sits above. There’s no point talking about a car like this in rational terms – it’s certainly not practical like a Golf Estate, but it’s certainly great to look at.

There are of course lots of diesel models, but the one we’re interested in is the CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake, completing the lineup of ’45 AMG models. Using the same impressive drivetrain as the rest of the models, it gets a turbocharged 2/0 litre four cylinder engine producing 355 bhp and 332 lb/ft of torque, driven to all four wheels via a seven speed dual clutch paddle shift gearbox.  0 – 62 mph is taken care of in just 4.7 seconds on the way to the 155mph limited top speed.

The CLA45 AMG Shooting Brake goes on sale in March 2015 for just over £43,000.
