Mercedes has completed their 45 AMG lineup with the new GLA45 AMG, based on the new GLA soft-roader. Complementing the A45 and CLA45 models, the GLA is a raised-up A-Class with pseudo-SUV capabilities but now with some serious firepower.

When we first saw the GLA we were impressed – it seems to be better proportioned and more muscular than the A-Class it’s based on and with the benefits given by the extra ground clearance and better visibility we’re not sure why you’d buy the A-Class. But that’s for a normal hatchback – what we’re talking about now is the hot hatch market, and can the taller stance of the GLA lend itself to a sporting model without falling over in the bends?

Visually the GLA45 gets a front end in line with the A45, with large air intakes, a single bar grille, a lower splitter/guard and twin power bulges on the bonnet. The rear gets a roof spoiler, aggressive bumper with side vents and a quad exhaust setup either side of the faux diffuser.

Under the bonnet lies the familiar 2.0 litre turbocharged 4-cyl engine with amazing power outputs of 355 bhp and 332 lb/ft of torque, which is fed through an AMG Speedshift 7-speed dual clutch gearbox to all four wheels. 0 – 62 mph is dealt with in 4.8 seconds and top speed is limited to 155 mph.

The main rivals for the GLA45 AMG will be the Audi RS Q3 and the larger Porsche Macan, which will cost more but have similar performance.

The Mercedes GLA45 AMG goes on sale in the Spring for around £45,000.
