Mercedes has pulled the wraps off its most technologically advanced car ever ahead of the public debut at the Geneva Motor Show next month – the S-Class Coupe. Previewed by the S-Class Coupe Concept, this is arguably the best looking Mercedes of recent times and is aiming to steal sales from the Bentley Continental GT.

Taking the nose treatment seen on the CLA and new S-Class saloon and blending them to form a low, sleek front end, the Coupe is definitely from the current family of Merc design, but it almost seems as if the other models have been made to look slightly awkward when they had this beautifully proportioned model there the whole time that they didn’t want to spoil. There are sharp creases down the flanks and a low, sleek glasshouse. But the biggest departure from the current Merc look is at the rear, where there are a set of slim, wide rear LED lamps and a tapering bootlid with a spoiler formed into the top. Mercedes has somehow managed to make and incredibly long car look sporty, lithe and aggressive all at the same time – deeply impressive and it makes us seriously want one.

We expect the rear end styling to appear next on the AMG GT – the SLS replacement coming later this year. The model in the pictures is the S500 which is the only model at launch in Europe, but it will be swiftly followed by the S63 AMG Coupe. Strangely the S63 will beat the S500 to British shores.

The S500 is powered by a 4.6 litre twin turbo V8 producing 448 bhp and 516 lb/ft of torque sent through an eight speed auto to the rear wheels – though for the first time the 4Matic four-wheel-drive system will be an option. The S500 should hit 62 mph in under 5 seconds with the normal limited 155 mph top speed. The S63 AMG Coupe will have a 577 bhp twin turbo 5.5 litre V8.

Two more engines will be added later this year, including the 516bhp, 6.0 litre twin turbo V12 S600 Coupe and an S65 AMG Coupe with a 600 bhp+ version of that engine.

The S63 AMG Coupe goes on sale in the UK in November for around £120,000, while the S500 will follow shortly after for just under £100,000.
