Mercedes has revealed their top of the range S-Class ahead of a simultaneous unveiling at the LA and Tokyo Motor Shows next week. As with previous generations, the S65 AMG sits above the already powerful S63 AMG but adds more power, exclusivity and in this generation, bling.

The styling of the S65 takes a bit of a step sideways from the subtle aggression of the S63, with a considerable amount of chrome detailing being added. This is undoubtedly a nod to the fact that the majority of these will be sold in the US and the Middle East where the chrome detailing is preferred. The aggressive front bumper gets chromed mesh and chrome edging to the intakes and splitter. This detailing continues down the side and on the rear as well with the quad pipes getting the same treatment. On the front wings sit ‘V12 BiTurbo’ badges.

This leads neatly onto the powerplant for this S65 – an all-new 6.0 litre twin turbo V12 unit producing an incredible 621 bhp and 737 lb/ft of torque. This is enough to enable the 5.2 metre long limo to sprint to 62 mph in 4.3 seconds on the way to a limited top speed of 155 mph. Rumour has it that the S65 would hit over 200 mph unlimited. Mercedes claims that this is the world’s most efficient V12, averaging 23.7 mpg and emitting just 279 g/km of CO2.

The S65 gets a raft of weight saving measures too, including a part-carbon fibre bonnet, a lithium ion battery and lightweight 20-inch alloy wheels. Standard is an AMG tuned version of the S-Class’s Magic Body Control system that uses GPS mapping and cameras to read the road ahead and adjust the suspension to suit the conditions coming up.

The S65 goes on sale in April 2014, priced at £160,000.
