Were big fans of Morgan here at BOTB News. The combination of big, powerful engines, classic styling and an unfaltering image make them seriously desirable. With the 3-Wheeler they have a massive success too, but the core has always been the Plus 8 model. With its BMW sourced V8 engine, and ash wood and aluminium chassis it’s a wonderful mix of the old and the new. But now Morgan has created a limited edition model aiming to pay homage to the past even more – the Plus 8 Speedster.

The classic look is made complete with the Speedster, referencing the old race cars that used to thunder around race tracks in the 50’s. There are a selection of 50’s-era solid paint colours (we particularly like battleship grey or mid-green), with light blue piping over the wings, around the towing eye and air inlets and down over the rear end. There are a set of bespoke 18-inch alloy wheels styled like steel wheels, a leather bonnet strap, low slung doors with no handles, a side exit exhaust and a gorgeous tan interior, not to mention the twin-bubble polycarbonate aero screen in place of a windscreen. It all just looks ‘right’ and makes the Speedster incredibly desirable.

Power is provided by a BMW 4.8 litre V8 with 390 bhp and 370 lb/ft of torque which is more than ample when the Speedster weighs just 1100 kg. This gives it a serious turn of speed, with 0 – 62 mph taking 4.3 seconds on the way to a 155 mph top speed. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard, with an optional six-speed automatic with paddles. Given the retro nature of the Speedster we think it’d be a travesty to go for anything other than the manual gearbox though.

Morgan say they’ll only be making 60 Speedsters, but we expect demand will force a rethink on that number, despite the high price of £69,995 before you start ticking the (extensive) options list.
