Volvo has thrown off the shackles and is aiming directly for a piece of the market occupied by the Audi A5 and BMW 6-Series, with a concept that shows off their new design language – the Concept Coupe.

Described as purely a styling concept, the Concept Coupe is however, based on Volvo’s new Scalable Product Architecture and features a hybrid powertrain, so we think that this previews a new C70 to rival the big German car makers’ coupes.  Officially the first place we’ll see this new styling is actually on the new XC90 SUV next year, but that will merely see the adoption of the larger grille and headlight design.

For the Concept Coupe, we can see definite links back to the P1800 of the 70’s, but there is certainly a new found confidence to the styling. A bold front end features the new floating concaved grille, there are large air intakes and the headlights feature new T-shaped LED DRLs which are set to be a design theme that run through the new Volvo range.

There are strong styling lines down the side and a sleek rear end that is sure to win Volvo lots of new fans.

We’ll take one with a nice big V8, thanks, and ditch the hybrid stuff…
