For the longest time, Range Rover had the luxury SUV market all to itself. They sat in the £100,000 bracket with a car that was fast, luxurious and stylish and had no real rivals (the Merc G-Wagen just isn’t refined enough) but deep in the bowels of a Crewe factory an idea was brewing. So now we have the Bentley Bentayga – an odd name, but what a vehicle. It may weigh in at 2.5 tonnes, but how does it manage 0-62mph in 4.8 seconds? That’ll be the incredible new twin turbo 4.0 V8 diesel engine producing 435bhp and 900Nm of torque – enough to stop the world turning when you accelerate.
Hang on, did we just say a diesel? In a Bentley? Yep, this is a first, but big diesel engines have always suited large SUVs well and this is no exception with all that torque available virtually from idle. There’s also the small matter of economy, the diesel Bentayga achieving over 50% better economy than the W12 variant at 35.8mpg. Inside this is a proper Bentley too, with acres of quilted leather and the highest level of quality. You won’t believe how well these go around corners or handle the rough stuff off road either; it’s a staggering vehicle in every respect.
