BMW Z4 M40i

BMW Z4 M40i

REVIEW

The Z4 was a massive hit for BMW when it was launched in 2002, replacing the somewhat dynamically lacking Z3 with a car that promised a return to proper BMW handling and sports car feel. The Z4M was a proper M/// car as well and it was the car to beat at the time. But when it was replaced in 2009 BMW seemed to lose their way slightly – it had a folding hardtop which added weight and it was tuned more for cruising than attacking back roads. Well now it’s 2018 and they’re into the third generation of Z4 and BMW promises that this is a return to the ethos of the first gen. So this time it’s a bit smaller, around 200kg lighter thanks to a fabric roof and in this M40i guise uses a little of the magic from M///GmbH to create a credible Boxster S rival once again. The styling will certainly divide opinion, but you can’t deny that it’s aggressive, distinctive and will turn heads. The interior is typical BMW style with clear logical instruments and a driver focus. All in, this could be the return to the proper BMW sports car we’ve all been waiting for – we can’t wait to get behind the wheel to find out!
