Hyundai i30 Fastback N

Hyundai i30 Fastback N

REVIEW

When Hyundai entered the hot hatch market earlier this year with their i30N, it’s safe to say there were fairly low expectations. A Korean brand with zero experience of performance cars couldn’t launch a car to rival the best hot hatches on market….. could it? Well they did, and not just a decent rival – the i30N is among the best available, some (including our own Tim Oldland) rating it the best on sale. So it makes sense that Hyundai will try and capitalise on that success which is where their second N model comes in, this time based on the Fastback version of the i30. So it’s much the same as with the hatchback, with an aggressive front bumper, lovely 19-inch alloy wheels, red brake calipers and chunky side skirts. But it’s around the rear doors that things change, with a new sloping roofline dipping down to the pert rear with a little lip spoiler. It’s a little longer than the hatchback model, meaning it has a slightly larger boot. This is because it too is a hatchback, so you lose little in practicality. Power is the familiar 271bhp 2.0 litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine going to the front wheels via the six speed manual gearbox, with the wonderful N-Mode which unleashes a WRC-car-esque noise from those twin exhaust pipes when you’re pressing on. It’ll be interesting to see if Hyundai keeps the Fastback N as hardcore as the normal i30N, either way we can’t wait to get behind the wheel!
