Well here it is – the reinvention of an icon. It has been a long time coming but finally Land Rover has released the all new Defender! Alongside the Aston Martin Vantage, this must have been one of the hardest design jobs in the business – replace one of the most iconic cars on the roads today, one that dates back decades and has in recent times had a resurgence thanks to the rugged cool looks. But you couldn’t go too retro or people would say it isn’t modern, so there are certainly nods to the old Defender, but it’s a fresh design that sits well in the LR lineup.
Chunky wheelarches, the signature floating roof with ‘Alpine windows’ in the top, a dominating grille and big chunky tyres so you can drive over anything. Inside it far more modern, full of the latest tech, but it still has a reassuringly old school feel to the layout. Being the 90 model, this Defender has 3 doors, a short wheelbase for funky looks and yet plenty of room inside, but for this ITH treat we’re going all out – the most expensive Defender 90 you can currently buy – the P400 X.
With the ‘X’ trim level you get pretty much every box ticked, including 20” wheels, matrix LED headlights, panoramic roof, orange brake calipers, gloss black bonnet, full premium leather interior, all the off-roading options, Keyless Entry, Meridian sound system and head-up display to name but a few. The X only comes with one engine choice, though it’s a cracker – Land Rover’s newest engine and their first mild hybrid - a brand new 3.0 litre straight-six engine which has an electric supercharger and a twin scroll turbo to give it 396bhp and 550Nm of torque.
A 48V electrical system powers that supercharger and gives a boost while the main turbo spools up, eliminating lag and meaning the car doesn't have to work as hard when accelerating.
