Mercedes 500SL (Classic 1980's)

Mercedes 500SL Classic Airport

REVIEW

The 1980’s Mercedes SL is one of those cars that is the embodiment of the phrase ‘they don’t make them like that anymore’. The 500SL might be over 30 years old now, but sit in one today and the quality and workmanship puts most modern cars to shame – no rattles or squeaks can be heard, while closing the door gives a resounding ‘thud’ that makes you think it’s made from solid granite. The 500SL is one of those cars that transcends cool, if you drive one around you get waves, people let you out of junctions and generally the world feels like a very nice place. The big lazy 5.0 litre V8 under that long bonnet is barely audible, but when you do hear it your ears are treated to a lovely V8 ‘woofle’ that lets you know that there are 237 ponies available under your right foot. All 500SLs came with a removable hard top too, so should you choose you can basically drive a coupe or remove it and have a convertible too.  The perfect classic? Maybe… ** Cash alternative: 80% of UK RRP **
