All three generations of the current Mini have had a John Cooper Works (JCW) version, which is generally more powerful, more focused and more aggressive looking. There has also always been an accompanying Challenge race car for their one-make race series. Despite their being limited run GP models, there had never been a direct link between road and race JCWs – until now. Thanks to a small team within Mini, the JCW Challenge sets out to make a road car that is as close to the racer as possible while still being driveable down a welsh back road as it is blasting around Brands Hatch. Visually it’s very much JCW, with their deep front bumper and rear spoiler, but with a more purposeful rear diffuser and a fatter exhaust poking out. There are of course lots of stripes and stickers too, because race car. The wheels are 17-inch Team Dynamics items exactly the same as on the race car, as are the adjustable Nitron dampers. Sitting 20mm lower at the rear and a massive 40mm lower at the front the Challenge looks incredibly aggressive. Hiding behind those wheels are the standard JCW brake calipers with Mintex pads and grooved discs, which provide the Challenge with staggeringly effective braking power. The Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres help this too, along with helping this JCW Challenge attack corners like no other hot hatch – it will just grip, grip and go.
