VW Golf R
Yes folks, it’s back!!
The previous generation Golf R was one of the most popular cars in the BOTB competition and with good reason – the perfect combination of all-weather performance, practicality, subtle looks and VW build quality meant it was the performance hot hatch that everyone wanted.
But then VW introduced the Golf Mk8 and there was no R – until now! The Golf R is back and brings everything the old car did, and more.
So firstly, the 2.0 litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine now has 316bhp and 420Nm, meaning the 0-62mph time has dropped to 4.7 seconds. The power still goes to all four wheels but now it has the 7-spd DSG gearbox as standard.
But it’s the oily (and electronic) bits that have seen the biggest change – there’s a new torque vectoring system for the AWD setup, more camber on the front wheels, stiffer spring rates all round, quicker steering, lighter and more powerful brakes and there’s even a Drift Mode that puts most of the power to the rear wheels.
The best has just got better!
Range Rover Sport P400e HSE Dynamic
The Range Rover Sport has always been one of the most popular cars in the BOTB Competition. In fact, since 2012 we've given away more than 20 of them!
Taking some of the styling seen on the Velar there are new headlights, a new grille and a more angular front bumper that manages to modernise and update the look of the Sport and means it doesn’t look old and frumpy next to the Velar!
There are some minor changes at the rear with updated rear lights and rear bumper, but the biggest changes are inside. The Sport interior was always nice, but now it takes the centre console from the Velar, with the large central screen and another screen directly below it to control the climate and other systems. It’s a seriously futuristic-looking thing with screens there and directly ahead of you in the binnacle.
But now the Sport has definitely moved into the future with this Hybrid model, dubbed the P400e thanks to its petrol engine linked to an electric motor with batteries to give 400hp. You can also do 31 miles on electric alone, produces a tiny amount of CO2 and does over 80mpg! This really can do it all…
