The Audi quattro (lower case ‘q’ – very important) might be famous for it’s starring role in TV’s ‘Ashes to Ashes’, but when it came out in the 1980s it caused a huge stir thanks to the striking looks and revolutionary powertrain.
Up front there was a turbocharged in-line 5cyl engine which in this 20V guise produced 220bhp – a huge amount for 1989 in a volume sports coupe model.
This went through the 5-speed manual gearbox to a four wheel drive system – the first to be offered on a large scale production coupe (the Jensen Interceptor FF had it years earlier, but that was low volume).
This meant the quattro could use its great handling and stunning performance all year round in any weather – one of the reasons it went on to sell incredibly well.
The other reason was that this model, with nothing more than some stickers and spotlights, went on to win multiple rallies – oh and the wonderful sounds made by that 5-cyl turbo engine. A modern classic in every way - we love it!
Winner can choose an Audi quattro 20v up to the value of £40,000 - get your tickets now before the competition closes at midnight on Wednesday.
