« Back BMW X3 M40i
Everyone loves a big SUV seemingly these days, it’s the single biggest market worldwide now. But in the UK at least, something like 90% of all SUVs sold are diesel engine and of those the majority are 2.0 litre 4-cylinder ones.
There’s no real soul to those engines, so it was with a pleasant surprise that we saw BMW launch their new X3 with the option of the engine from the brilliant M140i to create (no surprise) the X3 M40i.
Being an M-Performance model (sort of M///-lite) you get a much more sporting nature to the car, but still totally usable daily, much like the 1- and 2-Series models with this engine. Speaking of which, it’s a rather lovely 3.0 litre turbo straight-six which produces 355bhp.
That’s enough for a 0-62mph sprint in just 4.8 seconds, more than respectable for a hot hatch let alone a big SUV.
It also looks fantastic and being a BMW will devour country roads like nothing else.
