For those of you over the age of 30, you probably remember the Ford Puma as a cute little coupe from the 90’s, back when car manufacturers actually made small, interesting, cheap sports cars.
So it’s no great surprise that when the Puma name made a comeback, it was now in the form of a small SUV/crossover – after all they are the biggest selling type of car world-over right now.
Given that it goes up against the Nissan Juke, Ford really has knocked it out of the park with the styling – curvaceous hips, powerful haunches, wide arches – it genuinely does look like a pouncing cat. And we dare you to look at that front end and not be happy – it looks like a smiling cartoon character!
But Ford loves a hot hatch, and the Puma is based on the Fiesta, so we’re extremely happy that they’ve now created the Puma ST! The Ford Performance team are on a roll at the moment with their hot hatches, plus the Puma is a great drive, so this should be seriously good.
The engine is the same 197bhp 1.5 litre 3-cylinder turbo unit from the Fiesta, but has 320Nm of torque all the time (which the Fiesta only ever had on overboost).
Interior is the usual Ford, with clear digital instruments and a great seating position from the figure-hugginh Recaro seats, along with wireless charging, red stitching and a B&O stereo.
The perfect family car that’s also a hoot to drive down some back roads – yes please!
Win the Puma ST this week in the BOTB Midweek Car Competition!
