Audi reveals the S1 hot hatch

Posted 6 months ago in German, Miscellaneous News

Not quite as powerful or cool as the old S1 mind you…

Ahead of the public debut at the Geneva Motor Show, Audi has revealed the range-topping S1 with 228 bhp, making it the most powerful small hatch on the market.

Available as the three-door S1 and five-door S1 Sportback, the new hot hatchback uses a turbocharged 2.0 litre four cylinder petrol engine which puts out 228 bhp and 273 lb/ft of torque – big numbers for such a small car. Drive is sent to all four wheels using the Quattro system via a six speed manual gearbox. A seven-speed dual clutch gearbox will become an option later on in the model life. The S1 sprints to 62 mph in 5.8 seconds (5.9 for the Sportback) on the way to a limited 155 mph top speed.

Visually the new model isn’t instantly recognisable as a sporting model, but this is very much in keeping with Audi’s design language – only the RS models get the more outrageous body addenda. There are larger air intakes in the front bumper, along with Xenon headlights. At the rear there are LED tail lights and a faux diffuser, flanked by quad exhausts – which in all honesty we think is too much. We know that the S models have four round pipes and RS have two ovals, but 4 exhaust pipes on a 4-cylinder car seems a bit silly.

Deliveries are expected in April and the S1 costs £24,900 while the S1 Sportback is £25,630.
