Audi S4 Black Edition

Audi S4

REVIEW

Given everything that happened within the huge VW Group and Audi itself, you would expect diesel to be banished to the side lines, never to be seen again, and that was the case until recently. Because for 2019 the Audi S4 has been facelifted and the turbicharged V6 petrol engine is now gone, replaced by a V6 twin turbo…. Diesel? That’s right, now powered by diesel, the S4 has had a softer look applied to the nose, but with a larger grille and bigger intakes. That new power plant is certainly no sluggish lump either, with 342bhp and 700Nm of torque – that’s 100Nm more than the RS4 if you’re counting – and means you can sprint to 62mph in just 4.8 seconds. But being a diesel engine, you can also average almost 50mpg which is a huge difference to the old petrol engine. It even sounds good, though most of this is played through the speakers. What you end up with is a typically Audi ‘S’ saloon – stylish, powerful, understated and frugal, with a class-leading interior. The perfect daily driver.
