Let the battle of the big EV saloons commence! Mercedes was out first with their EQS, but now BMW aren’t far behind with this; their new i7. Designed alongside the new 7-Series, it’s a full size luxury saloon with a big range.

Whereas Merc went traditional with the looks of the EQS, BMW has gone all-out futuristic with the i7 – there are the ever-expending large kidney grilles up front, with the split headlight treatment shared with the facelifted X7.

It’s a big car, and to say it’s imposing would be an understatement, with a high bodyline, that front end and wheel options up to 22-inch. The rear is more traditional, with slim rear lights and a high boot lid.

The i7 is, of course, fully electric, so there is a massive 101.7kWh battery which gives an impressive 387 miles of range on the WLTP test. This means a real-world range of well over 300 miles, perfect for this sort of luxury vehicle, especially when it can superfast charge from 10-80% in just 30 minutes.

Performance is spectacular, too, as the two motors (making the i7 AWD) combine for 536bhp and 745Nm, meaning 0-62mph is dispatched in just 4.7 seconds.

The interior of the i7 is next-level, though, with dual screens ahead of the driver first seen in the iX and a clean, tech-heavy design that really stands out. The rear is where this sort of large saloon excels, though, and the i7 has to be the best out there, with loads of rear legroom, reclining seats and even the option of an enormous 32-inch widescreen that folds down from the roof lining to enable rear passengers to watch movies. Insane!

And you could win a super luxurious BMW i7 in this week’s BOTB Dream Car Competition!
