REVIEW

The M3 is a huge success for BMW and hugely popular in our competition, for good reason. The combination of great handling, lots of power and four door practicality makes the M3 hard to beat. Some journalists were critical of the engine and spiky handling in the M3 and M4 though, until BMW launched the limited run M4 GTS, with more power, lighter weight and a far more focused driving experience that addressed all the criticisms of the standard M car. However, the GTS came in at around £130,000 which despite the water-injected 495bhp engine was a lot of money for a tweaked £55,000 car. Now BMW has taken what it learned on the GTS and applied it to their production models to create the M4 CS and this, the M3 CS. There’s a tweaked version of the twin-turbo 3.0 litre straight six so it now produces 454bhp along with more torque, while the suspension uses the same stiffer springs and dampers as the Competition Pack. Visually there is a new carbon front splitter and carbon bootlid spoiler along with new, lighter 19-inch alloy wheels in a stunning twin-five spoke design, while the CS offers two new paint finishes as well. The interior gets lighter parts and swathes of alcantara too. Put all this together and you get the best M3 yet and one that has the exhilarating drive to back up the stunning aggressive looks.
