Hmmm, how far into this DeLorean review can we get before we mention Back to the Future? Ah, okay not that far then. The fact is, the DeLorean DMC-12 is probably more famous throughout the world thanks to the Sci-Fi blockbuster from 1985 than by anything the car manufacturer did. After all it had only been out a few years before the film and again had only really made headlines thanks to the slightly dubious antics of the company’s owner.
But the DeLorean certainly had its own charms – the body was brushed stainless steel which gave it a unique look and it had the most iconic of 80’s car features – gullwing doors. The engine wasn’t quite as glamorous though – a 2.9 litre Renault V6 which produced 170bhp. in the US it was strangled by the new emissions regulations though and only made 130bhp with a restricted top speed of just 85mph! It couldn’t even make the famed 88mph from the film.
But thankfully the European version was much better, and at the end of the day the DMC-12 is one of the most recognisable cars ever made, so get buying those tickets in the BOTB Dream Car Competition!
