Mini John Cooper Works GP

Mini John Cooper Works GP

REVIEW

Watch out Civic Type-R, the title of ‘most outlandish hot hatch’ has a new contender! Following the first two generations of hardcore stripped out Minis, the new John Cooper Works GP is here and is the most aggressive and outrageous model yet. The standard JCW bodykit has been ramped up with a bigger intake at the front, red detailing all over, aero wheelarch extensions with lightweight 18-inch alloys and a monster rear wing that wouldn’t look out of place on a WRC car. Packing a monster 302bhp 2.0 lire turbo engine, it’s certainly got the performance to match the looks as well, hitting 62mph from standstill in just over 5 seconds on the way to a 164mph top speed. This GP differs in that it only comes with an 8-speed automatic gearbox, but this means your hands are on the wheel at all times to control this little track weapon. There are no rear seats, replaced by a strut bar, so plenty of room for helmets and spare tyres. There’s likely to be little else as fun on road or track for the money.
