Volkswagen Golf GTi Performance DSG

Volkswagen Golf GTi Performance DSG

REVIEW

Is there a hatchback more iconic than the Golf GTi? Some may say yes, but since the lightweight, nimble Mk1 of the 70's the Golf GTi has always meant affordable fun motoring, with a classless look meaning it doesn't look out of place outside a chip shop or a casino. With the latest GTi VW have pulled out all the stops – lighter than the Mk6, with more power and a chassis that is pure delight. Add in the classic tartan interior, golf ball shaped gear knob and the red stripe which now extends from the grille into the headlights and you have a very distinctive hot hatch with quality to rival many cars in the class above. For 2017 the Mk7.5 GTi got a modest 10bhp power hike, plus new TFT dials, LED headlights and gesture control for the Satnav/Infotainment system. But this is the GTi Performance, so you get a power boost taking it to 242bhp along with the very clever VAQ limited slip front differential which helps to put that power down to the road without spinning up an inside wheel in corners. When you need to come to a stop the upgraded brakes will be a big help and we’ve chosen the 7-speed DSG gearbox too, so you get lightning-quick shifts from the incredible dual-clutch gearbox. This is the perfect daily driving hot hatch – just enough power to be lots of fun, but still very driveable and not costly to run - plus the legendary VW quality and image.
