« Back Volkswagen Golf GTi TCR Performance
The Golf GTi is one of the most compelling choices in the hot hatch market, but has been somewhat overshadowed by the Golf R and even with the most potent version having only 246bhp it lagged behind rivals a little recently.
So for the run-out of the Mark 7.5 Golf, VW has created a more powerful, exciting and track-capable GTi aimed at those who love to blast down back roads or do the occasional trackday – the TCR.
Named after the WTCR racing championship in which a Golf competes, in this instance it delves into the VW parts bin once again and creates a bit of a gem. So the engine is now the 286bhp version of the familiar EA888 four-cylinder turbocharged unit seen all over the VW Group, with 380Nm of torque all going to the front wheels via the 7spd DSG gearbox.
This means a 5.6 second sprint to 62mph, which is rather sprightly. If you choose the Performance package with 19-inch ‘Pretoria’ alloys (as we have here, for you), you also get 20mm lower suspension, lighter wheels, a top speed increase to 162mph and Michelin Cup Sport 2 tyres.
This is going to be one seriously fun hot hatch - and you could win one in the BOTB Dream Car competition!
