With a new puppy to look after, Derek was working from home in Fife earlier today and Christian braved the wintry weather to surprise him with the amazing news that he’d also won £20,000 in cash…enough for a life’s supply of dog food! Three reasons to celebrate for Fife man who scooped £105k star prize

Jan 2019

They say good things come in threes and that was certainly the case for Fife man Derek Hastie.

The lucky Glenrothes resident has won a prize worth £105,000 in a competition run by Best of the Best (BOTB), the dream car and lifestyle competition company.

Derek scooped a Nissan GT-R Recaro sportscar worth £85,000 along with £20,000 in cash.

It was the perfect end to a great week for Derek and his family, who celebrated his son’s sixth birthday on the same day and also welcomed Bullmastiff puppy Rocco into their lives days earlier.

BOTB’s Christian Williams delivered the prize on Tuesday, while Derek was home looking after the new dog.

He said: “I’m still in shock, I just can’t believe I’ve won, especially on the same day as my son’s birthday.

“I’m not sure that I’m going to let the dog in the car though.”

Listed on the stock market, BOTB has high-profile stands at airports and in Britain’s biggest shopping centres.

Derek’s wife Louise had a shock of her own when she was called by Christian on Monday to arrange the surprise for her husband.

“She was so was shocked – you just don’t expect these things – and it turns out that her office even knew before me,” Derek added.

Derek said the prize money will go towards home renovations and potentially a static caravan in Pitlochry where Derek and his family can go for some rest and relaxation.

He said: “Not a penny will go to waste, I promise you.”

TESTIMONIAL

I don’t think anything can prepare you for Christian turning up at your door. I’ve watched many winners being surprised and found myself smiling while watching them, thinking how fantastic it must be to get that knock on your door. I think shock is the only way to describe how I felt initially, then excitement that you have just won your dream car. It went so fast, and once the guys had left I was thinking “did that really just happen?” I did have a jump about the kitchen when I had a moment to myself that afternoon!

BOTB has been great and everything has been very straightforward. John at Nobles Nissan in Edinburgh also kept me informed while I was waiting what felt a lifetime (even though it was only 2 months) for the car to arrive. The car collection day was nice to share with my son, who is 6 and already a petrol head! As for the car itself? It is just sensational! It has had some great reactions – when complete strangers are giving you the thumbs up, or filming the car with their phones, you know you picked the right one!

For the first few days, I was still waiting on someone tapping me on the shoulder to tell me I’d had my fun and it’s time to hand the keys back. I still smile when I open my garage and see the car, still not quite believing it’s actually mine! Thank you to everyone at BOTB for making this possible.
