Gran-of-16 labelled 'jammy' by family after winning prize worth £31k on first time entry

Apr 2024

A Welsh gran of 16 has been labelled "jammy" by her family after winning a car and cash prize worth a total of £31,000 after entering a competition for the very first time. Debbie Hughes entered a BOTB giveaway where an Audi A1 Sportback worth £29,000 and a £2,000 cash prize were up for grabs.
Ms Hughes, from Stanleytown, couldn’t believe her luck after finding out she was a Daily Draws Competition winner. The 58-year-old was enjoying a relaxing day at home when she received a video call from BOTB presenter Christian Williams who surprised her with the news.
She said she had also been told by her family to spend some of her winnings on herself. The news came as a particular shock to her son and husband - both regular BOTB players.
She said: "I've never won anything like this before, so I'm very excited. I’ve not had a lot of money lately, so I thought it was worth the gamble and I can’t believe I’ve won on the first time of entering. My son and husband, who play quite regularly, have called me jammy.”

The stunning Audi A1 Sportback features an i4 Turbo engine, 148bhp and a top speed of 134mph. But Ms Hughes, who also has seven children, said she was planning to take the cash alternative. BOTB hands over the keys to a stunning dream car each week as well as a lifestyle prize. The competition experts recently gave away their biggest ever prize, with pizza delivery driver Marius Preda from Tamworth bagging £500,000. BOTB currently has Instant Win prizes up for grabs, with 5,000 to 15,000 winners everyday. Founded by William Hindmarch in 1999, it has given away £64 million worth of cars so far.
Ms Hughes added: “I’ve always been a giver and friends and family have said this couldn’t have happened to a nicer person. I’ve got three granddaughters who all turn 17 in November. Initially, I was going to give the car to one of them as it’s their dream car and there’s no way she would have been able to afford one.

"But it was a bit unfair on the others, so I’m going to take the cash alternative so that I can help them all out. I’m also going to put some money aside for Christmas for the family, which will make my life easier when the time comes to buying them presents. I want to get my teeth done and I want some work done on the outside of the house. We’ve also got a holiday booked to Cyprus later in the year, so it will help pay off that.

Mr Williams added: “It was amazing to be able to surprise Debbie with this fantastic prize. Winning on her first time entering the competition, luck was definitely on her side and she was clearly very shocked when I told her the news. With such a large family to support, it sounds like the cash is going to come in very handy.”
