REVIEW

You know when you’re driving along in summer and a wasp flies in through the open window, buzzing around angrily in the car? That’s how I like to think of the Abarth 695 Biposto – an angry wasp. The slightly unhinged Italians at Abarth HQ take the top spec 595 model and firstly tweak the engine to 188bhp (that’s quite a lot in such a small car). Then it goes on a weight-saving diet by removing the rear seats and replacing the front seats with carbon-backed buckets, using lightweight OZ Racing wheels and losing the A/C and radio. All in, it weighs just 997kg – that’s over 100kg less than a Fiesta ST. There’s also some incredibly stiff suspension and should you feel like spending the crazy £8000 option price you can have an open-gate dogleg racing gearbox. The noise that the Abarth makes borders on unsociable thanks to the Akrapovic exhaust – it barks, pops, crackles and screams like nothing else. Basically this is as focused as a 3dr hot hatch can get and is as happy on the track as it is eating up your favourite twisty back road. **Cash alternative: 80% of the ex-VAT UK RRP **
