BMW e46 M3
There are few cars loved by enthusiasts as much as the BMW M3.
The early e36 models have a keen following, but they're somewhat fragile now - see our videos with CarThrottle for proof - so the clever money is now in that car’s successor: the e46 M3.
Using a 3.2-litre straight-six engine with a lightweight crankshaft and graphite coated aluminium pistons, it revved to 8000rpm and put out 338bhp. Performance was brisk thanks to the 1450kg kerb weight, with 0-62mph taking just 5.1 seconds.
But the raw numbers only tell part of the story with the e46 M3 – the engine sings and screams its way through the rev range, there’s a delicious howl from the exhausts and the steering and handling are just sublime.
Add in the fact that there are four very usable seats, a big boot and (relatively) understated looks and you can see why the e46 M3 has such a huge following…
Mercedes-AMG C63-S Coupe
The old Mercedes C63 AMG was a very popular car, but you could never really call it pretty. Purposeful, yes, but not pretty. So for the new model Mercedes has decided to take the glamorous S-Class Coupe and stick it on a hot wash!
The new C-Class Coupe gets the big brother’s rear end with slim lights and a pert tail, while the front gets the new corporate look. But this is the C63-S AMG, the top of the tree, so it has huge intakes, wider arches, bigger wheels, and oh yes, a 503bhp, 4.0-litre twin turbo-V8 giving serious performance and even more serious exhaust noise.
Plus for 2020 you don't need the AMG Driver's pack of old to hit the big numbers - the top speed is now an autobahn-crushing 180mph. Add in a stylish, luxurious interior and the new C63S Coupe takes the BMW M4 and beats it hands down in every category. We’ll take one in vibrant blue, please…
