When BMW decided they needed a new sports car to top their range, they did just what they're well known for doing – thought outside the box.
Sure, they could have made a slinky looking, low supercar with the M5 engine, but they wanted to innovate so turned to the new i-Division.
Step forward the i8 – a full carbon fibre hybrid super sports car with wild looks and incredible performance. Mating a 1.5 litre 3-cylinder turbo engine driving the rear wheels to a pair of electric motors driving the fronts gives a total power output of 369 bhp and zero emissions around town.
Performance is as you’d expect – 4.6 seconds to 62mph and the kind of seamless shove that only EV assist can provide.
This is the Roadster version too, so there's an eletrically folding fabric hard top that disappears into the bulkhead behind you at the press of a button and you get to hear either the silence of the EV powertrain or the delightful thrum of the engine.

When BMW decided they needed a new sports car to top their range, they did just what they're well known for doing – thought outside the box.
Sure, they could have made a slinky looking, low supercar with the M5 engine, but they wanted to innovate so turned to the new i-Division.
Step forward the i8 – a full carbon fibre hybrid super sports car with wild looks and incredible performance. Mating a 1.5 litre 3-cylinder turbo engine driving the rear wheels to a pair of electric motors driving the fronts gives a total power output of 369 bhp and zero emissions around town.
Performance is as you’d expect – 4.6 seconds to 62mph and the kind of seamless shove that only EV assist can provide.
This is the Roadster version too, so there's an eletrically folding fabric hard top that disappears into the bulkhead behind you at the press of a button and you get to hear either the silence of the EV powertrain or the delightful thrum of the engine.
