The BMW X5 has always been one of the best-handling SUVs. In fact, when it came out, it was pretty much the first of the new breed. Well, fast-forward to today, and you won’t believe how quickly the latest X5M Competition will go down a back road.
There are many reasons for that, not least the absolute powerhouse under the bonnet – a 4.4-litre twin turbo V8 producing 617bhp and 750Nm. That means this SUV can sprint to 62mph in just 3.8 seconds – that’s as quick as supercars used to be!
X5s have always looked good, too, but this X5M Competition takes it to another level, with a front end so imposing that most traffic will dive out of the way in fear. Up front, there’s a massive blacked-out grille, three huge air intakes, and a set of sleek headlights, while the rear gets the usual M/// quad exhaust tips that make an unholy noise.
The interior is also a typical BMW masterpiece, with a driver-focused layout and all the tech and kit you could imagine. All this combines to make a seriously quick SUV that could embarrass most sports cars but one that is also capable of cruising in comfort with the family onboard.
