Honda Civic Type-R
The Honda Civic Type-R is a hot hatch favourite, so Honda weren’t about to change the format. Visually the new Type-R takes the aggression of the old one and turns the dial up to 11, so the rear wing is bigger, the wheels are bigger, the front intakes bigger, the front spoiler lower and the side skirts fatter. It looks like it would drive off the race track, kick you in the shins and steal your wallet. There’s 10bhp more taking it to 316bhp going through the front wheels, all tamed with a limited slip differential as before. The driving experience is now better when cruising and just as focused when going for it thanks to the new driving mode options and there’s rev matching on the 6-speed manual gearbox, it’s an animal.
Abarth 124 Spider
Abarth brought out their 124 Spider based on the Fiat version recently and surprised everyone - under the bonnet lies a 1.4 litre turbo with 170bhp, and is was angry, ferocious and has one of the most downright naughty exhaust sounds of anything this side of am AMG Merc. The styling is almost unrecognisable from the Fiat base, with a black bonnet and boot, lovely alloys and a more aggressive nose not to mention those quad pipes sticking out of the back. Being a small, lightweight RWD sports car you can imagine it’s pretty fun to drive, but the Abarth 124 really is an absolute hoot – oversteer when you want it, precise handling and even great damping for our terrible roads.
