The Mercedes G-Wagen has been in production for 45 years and still looks almost identical to the original model. Mercedes knows that EV is the future though, so they’ve taken their oldest model and injected the most modern tech they could find to create the G580 EQ – the electric G-Wagen!
The outside is pure G-Wagen, but with some subtle hints that give away the silent powertrain – the bonnet is slightly higher, wheelarches smoother, there’s a blanked-off grille and tiny changes to the roof gutters. These all combine to make the G580 EQ even more aerodynamically efficient, which is really needed.
There’s a monster 116kWh battery and thanks to those aero changes it manages 293 miles on a charge, plus you can add 250 miles in about half an hour at a rapid charger.
There are some big bonuses to EV power too, there’s 579bhp and a staggering 1164Nm of torque, which means 0-62mph takes just 4.7 seconds, while the independent motors mean it can do a 720-degree spin on the spot!
