Mini Cooper S
When Mini launched the new Cooper S in 2001 it set a new benchmark for the segment. Fast, great handling, fun and great styling meant that sales went through the roof and continued right through the second generation model which was sold worldwide to great success. But times change and now Mini has released the third generation of Cooper S. With a new 2.0 litre turbo engine putting out 189 bhp the Cooper S certainly has the speed – 6.7 seconds to 62 mph and a 146 top speed are pretty quick, but also despite being bigger than the predecessor it still handles like a go kart.
Land Rover Defender 110 SE D200
Well here it is – the reinvention of an icon. It has been a long time coming but finally Land Rover has released the all new Defender! Alongside the Aston Martin Vantage, this must have been one of the hardest design jobs in the business – replace one of the most iconic cars on the roads today, one that dates back decades and has in recent times had a resurgence thanks to the rugged cool looks. But you couldn’t go too retro or people would say it isn’t modern, so there are certainly nods to the old Defender, but it’s a fresh design that sits well in the LR lineup. Chunky wheelarches, the signature floating roof with ‘Alpine windows’ in the top, a dominating grille and big chunky tyres so you can drive over anything. Inside it far more modern, full of the latest tech, but it still has a reassuringly old school feel to the layout. Being the 110 model, this Defender has 5 doors and plenty of room inside, while SE spec brings all the spec you could want. Powering this Defender is the 2.0 litre Ingenium diesel engine with 197bhp and 430Nm, more than enough to move this chunky off-roader around.
