Gets Evoque style and goes on a serious diet…
After almost a year of barely disguised prototypes being snapped, along with the occasional photo leak, Land Rover has finally revealed the all-new 2014 Range Rover to the world, albeit in just 5 images for now.
Sporting a front end treatment very much like the Evoque, the new Range Rover must have been one of the most difficult cars to redesign. How you redesign an icon? By sticking to the core principles, in Land Rover’s case. The big RR has always had commanding road presence, mainly due to its size and blunt styling, but that styling meant poor economy at speed, and the large body didn’t help the figures either.
So for 2014 the Range Rover has been to Weight Watchers – constructed from mostly aluminium now, the Range Rover has saved an incredible 420 kg over the previous model. In pure engineering terms that is an incredible achievement; in the real world it brings multiple benefits. Ride and handling will be better as the dampers don’t have to work so hard to contain all the mass, while the economy figures will shoot up as the car loses 1/5th of its weight.
The new car will use the same engines as before, with some tweaks and one new arrival. The big sellers will be the existing 3.0 SDV6 diesel with 255 bhp and the 4.4 TDV8 diesel with around 320 bhp. There will still be the option of the fantastic 510 bhp 5.0 V8 Supercharged engine, which should now give electrifying performance with the new weight loss, plus for those allergic to diesel the Range Rover will be getting a version of Jaguar’s latest 3.0 V6 Supercharged petrol engine.
Styling wise, we get a more aerodynamic Evoque style front end, with swept back headlights and the three bar grille slopes much more than ever before. At the rear there is a small wraparound element to the lights, but overall it’s an understated look. The new model is clearly longer than the old model, and probably taller and wider too, which makes the weight loss even more impressive. We really like the styling, it retains the graceful looks of the outgoing model but adds modern touches and will ensure that the design stays fresh for years to come.
The Range Rover has taken a move even further upmarket though – base models are likely to cost £70,000 while top spec versions will be knocking on for £120,000. That takes the RR straight into Bentley Flying Spur territory, but with an extra 118mm of legroom in the rear we’d wager that they aiming for Rolls Royce Ghost customers. The new interior certainly takes a few styling cues from the Evoque, but it results in a truly luxurious cabin.
