Audi has revealed the new RS3 far ahead of the public reveal at the Geneva Motorshow in March 2015, hoping to take a little wind out of Mercedes’ sails with their incredibly popular A45 AMG.

Using a reworked version of the 2.5 litre 5-cylinder turbo engine from the old RS3, TT-RS and RS Q3, the new RS3 trumps the A45’s 355 bhp with 362 bhp & 343 lb/ft of torque and a rather nice 5-cylinder engine note as opposed to the slightly ‘normal’ sounding Mercedes. With the standard 4WD system giving huge amounts of grip, the new RS3 is capable of 0 – 62 mph in 4.3 seconds on the way to a limited 155 mph top speed. Increasing that to 174 mph will be a (probably very expensive) option. The RS3 weighs in at 1520 kg which is 55 kg lighter than its predecessor.

Audi has gone to great lengths to distinguish the RS3 from the lesser A3 and S3 models and it’s certainly successful. The RS3 is instantly recognisable thanks to the huge front intakes in the bumper with the matt aluminium painted section joining the two, flanking the central grille with the option of a ‘QUATTRO’ lower section.  The rear end has a deep diffuser and twin oval exhausts, while there are 19-inch alloy wheels as standard, with 20-inch as options.

The RS3 is available as the 5dr Sportback only at the moment, but there are hints that a 4dr saloon version could be on its way to rival the CLA45 AMG. The new RS3 goes on sale next summer and should cost around the same as the current model at £39,995.
