ITH – All Wheel Drive Wonders 2.0! {{favouriteCount}} Quantity of Likes

29 Aug 2018

Yep, looks like summer is on its way out. We had a good run, but the rain has started and the roads are getting slipperier and slipperier. So the logical thing is to buy a big AWD vehicle, isn’t it? Well not really, you see we do love an AWD car here at BOTB but big SUVs are only the answer in a few situations. For that you can choose the Urus-Lite, known as the Audi Q8 to the rest of us. Fancy something high quality yet still sure footed and able to see over traffic? That’ll be the Tiguan R-Line. Fancy some actual proper off-roading up in the hills? Get yourself in a new Jimny. And want a performance car with 530hp but you don’t want to end up in a ditch at the first corner? Go see ABT about their RS4-R. Enjoy…

ABT RS4-R

We absolutely love the new Audi RS4 here at BOTB. Okay sure, the downgrade to a V6 from the V8 was a little disappointing at first but that was before we drove it – the new 2.9 litre twin turbo V6 is a monster of an engine and the RS4 handles incredibly well, whilst looking like only an Audi RS Avant can – subtle yet menacing. But what if you want…. more? Well that would be ABT’s job – they take the RS4 and using their considerable experience make it the best RS4 you can buy – the RS4-R. As with any tuning job you can expect the engine to get some work done and you’d be correct – ABT’s ECU tune bumps power from 444bhp to 523bhp and torque jumps to 690Nm. That’s good enough for ABT to claim 0-62mph in 3.8 seconds, though two different magazines have tested the RS4-R and it has done 3.5 seconds. In a family estate car! Top speed is 174mph which is adequate should you find yourself on the autobahn. Visually ABT has done some great work too – at the front there’s carbon galore – a carbon framed front grille has the RS4-R logo on it, while a carbon lip spoiler sits below it and there are dive planes/flics/canards at the sides, again in carbon. At the rear there are four 102mm carbon tipped exhaust pipes that release some much-needed noise and they sit within a new more aggressive carbon diffuser. If that wasn’t enough ABT also add some retrimming to the interior with their own logos embroidered around the lovely Audi interior. This may just be the best estate car we’ve ever had in the competition!

Suzuki Jimny GLX Auto

Hey – you, yes you. Stop laughing at the back. Stop it. We subscribe to the theory that small is beautiful here at BOTB and you don’t get much smaller than the new Suzuki Jimny. The previous generation was known as being surprisingly good off road, but looked pretty rubbish and was very cheap inside, but now Suzuki has learned from what Mercedes has done with the G-Class and gone retro.  In fact it has more than a passing resemblance to the G-Class, if you squint a bit. Suzuki has basically realised that rugged is what people want out of their small off-roader, so the Jimny is now more angular, with a boxy body, big black wheelarches, a Jeep-esque front grille and bumper and a traditional side-hinged rear door with a spare tyre mounted on it. The interior looks fantastic too, all exposed screwheads, simple controls and wipe-clean surfaces. This isn’t some gas-guzzling SUV though, the nimble little Jimny has a 101bhp 1.5 litre engine so is incredibly economical. But what impresses most about the Jimny is that it will embarrass probably 80% of the AWD off-roaders on sale when you actually get into the muddy stuff. We want to have a go!

Volkswagen Tiguan BiTDi R-Line 4MOTION DSG

How does Volkswagen do it? A medium sized SUV should generally look blobby, not particularly exciting and send you into a coma when you drive it, but all it takes is 10 seconds standing in front of the new Tiguan R-Line before you start to get excited. With the massively aggressive front bumper it looks like it will eat anything in front of it and it lends the whole front end a really squat, wide look. Add in the lovely 20-inch alloy wheels and this is definitely one of the best looking SUVs on sale. We’ve gone for the top spec too, so under the bonnet you have their most powerful 2.0 litre diesel engine, producing 237bhp and 500Nm of torque. That means it can hit 62mph in 6.5 seconds all while still managing over 40mpg – very impressive stuff. Once you add in the fact that the Tiguan loses very little to the Golf in terms of handling yet is a lot more practical, you have a seriously desirable family car.

Audi Q8 50TDi Vorsprung

What do you do if you love the angular aggressive, low roofed looks of the Lamborghini Urus but don’t have the £180,000 to buy one? You buy this – the Audi Q8. You see the two models are pretty much the same under the skin, if you ignore the drivetrain. You see yes, the Urus has a powerful twin turbo V8 (and a coming RSQ8 will probably have this) but for now the Q8 is only available with Audi’s 3.0 litre twin turbo V6 diesel engine producing 282bhp. So it may not be as quick, or sound as good, but it’s going to be a lot more economical and you’ll be able to go more than 200 miles between filling station visits. To these eyes the Q8 actually looks better than the Urus too, with the boldest version of Audi’s new large grille yet and dual level LED headlights. It looks more SUV-ish, bold and purposeful while still looking fairly sleek. We’re offering the Vorsprung version too, which pretty much ticks every option for you including 22-inch alloys, black styling pack, panoramic roof, Adaptive Air Suspension, B&O Sound System and leather Supersport seats.
