Mercedes-Benz has revealed the new GLA ahead of the public reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. Based on the A-Class it slots beneath the GLK in the European lineup, but will be available in the UK unlike the current GLK.

With styling very reminiscent of the A-Class, yet much better proportioned and better resolved, the GLA is set to go head to head with the Audi Q3, BMW X1 and Range Rover Evoque in the premium small soft-roader market.

Looking very much like the Concept GLA seen at Geneva, the GLA has a very low to the ground look with a bold front end and a rear much like the concept, without the fancy detailing. The fact that it looks very much like the A-Class, only better, could be a hindrance in the European market but it is going to be sold in the US, where there is no A-Class which starts to make sense.

The majority of the models will be front wheel drive, but Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel drive system will be an option on the larger engines. There will be a 154 bhp 1.6 litre turbocharged petrol engine in the base GLA200 and a 134 bhp 1.8 litre turbodiesel in the big selling GLA200 CDi – both of these models will be front wheel drive.

To get four wheel drive you would need either the 208 bhp 2.0 litre turbo petrol engined GLA250, or the 2.1 litre turbodiesel with 168 bhp in the GLA220 CDi. You get a six speed manual gearbox on the front wheel drive models, while there is an optional seven speed dual clutch automatic gearbox. This gearbox is standard on the all-wheel drive models.

Given that the A-Class and CLA models both have the AMG ’45 engined variants, we would expect that next year a GLA45 AMG will join the range, with the four wheel drive, dual clutch powertrain and 355 bhp 2.0 litre turbocharged engine. Now this we look forward to!

It goes on sale in late 2013 and starts at £25,000 for the GLA200.
