For what seemed like forever, Range Rover had the luxury SUV market all to itself.
But deep in the bowels of a Crewe factory, an idea was brewing. And now we have the Bentley Bentayga – an odd name, but what a vehicle.
It may weigh in at 2.5 tonnes but still manages 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds thanks to the incredible twin turbo 4.0 V8 petrol engine. It produces 542bhp and 770Nm of torque – enough to stop the world from turning when you accelerate.
So there's a supreme luxury in this V8 Bentayga - that's a given as it's Bentley - but you also get epic performance, a surprisingly fruity soundtrack and a new 180mph top speed. In an SUV.
The biggest surprise is that it'll actually hit 25mpg with a light right foot - not as good as the old V8 diesel, but you get more performance and a far better noise. We do love a petrol V8!
In 2020, the Bentayga received a facelift, with a sleeker front end and more upright grille, along with more complex LED headlight units. The rear saw the addition of new rear lights that ape the Continental GT, giving a clear family link. Inside there was a whole host of new tech - the best got even better!
