We hope you’re sitting down because BMW’s M/// division is making one heck of a statement! 2022 marks the 50th anniversary of BMW M///, and to celebrate, they have created the second-ever car that’s only an M/// product after the M1 from the ’70s.

To show how big the market is, BMW has marked this occasion with the new XM and boy, oh boy, is it bold!

This is a huge performance SUV with seriously out-there styling. A huge front end is dominated by the grille, which is unusually small for modern BMWs, but in this case, stands out thanks to the LED-lit rim around it – there’ll certainly be no mistaking an XM in your rearview mirror at night. BMW’s new split-level headlight design features, and then there’s surfacing galore down the sides.

The roofline tapers down the long body (10cm longer than a Range Rover), and the rear rises up, giving a really unique look. Within the contoured rear bumper sit two double exhausts stacked vertically. And to top the styling off, there’s a judicious use of matte gold trim, which really lifts the exterior look.

The XM is powered by the venerable 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, but that has been detuned as it’s now paired with a 25kWh battery and electric motor, meaning a combined 644bhp and 800Nm of torque. But as it’s a hybrid with a realistic EV-only range of over 50 miles, the XM manages a combined 188mpg and produces barely any CO2.

M/// division has thrown every bit of tech and knowledge they have at the new XM, so despite being 2.7 tonnes, we expect it’ll also defy the laws of physics and be an absolute hoot to drive.
